A swamp tour is a beautiful, fun way to learn about and watch wildlife in the wetlands. Egrets, alligators, herons, turtles, and more are pointed out by guides. A lot of swamp tours feed the wildlife, but we don’t. Make sure you support an eco-tour that doesn’t feed alligators marshmallows.
-
Old swamp boats are usually called pirogues and are very close in design (flat bottom) and use to the kayaks that we use on our swamp tours in New Orleans. Pirogues were used to get back into narrow and shallow areas that big, noisy motorized boats cannot reach. Sadly, these small man-powered vessels are quickly becoming a relic.
-
Alligators are very common in Louisiana. Being cold-blooded, they tend to slow down when temperatures dip below 60 degrees, but they are in abundance and visible during our tours for most of the year! 🐊
-
As long as the temperature is above 70 degrees during the winter, there is a good chance you will find an alligator come out and sun themselves. There are a lot of days when this happens. If the temperature is below 70 degrees, this is not likely to happen, although there are a lot of great sights to view in the swamp nonetheless.
-
So, now that you are ready for your New Orleans swamp tour, you need to know what essentials to bring! We recommend that you bring:
- Sunscreen — don’t forget your legs
- Bug repellent — only necessary for tours near dusk
- Camera — for some gorgeous photography and selfies
- Light clothing you don’t mind getting wet or a little dirty, like a swimsuit.
-
Just near dusk
-
Most swamp tours run for about two hours. Hire us for a private swamp tour if you want to stay out longer.
-
Tours last approximately four hours in total. We cannot control traffic, so we cannot guarantee an exact return time.
-
Do not look at the forecast prior to the day of the tour! Light rain is usually a cool welcome in the spring and summer months. If the weather has lightning and thunder, we will contact you ASAP. If we cancel a tour due to severe weather/cold and you can’t reschedule, we will offer a full refund.
-
On a kayak swamp tour, you should dress for the weather and wear light, layered, breathable clothing, such as a swimsuit during the warm months, and wear a warmer fleece or windbreaker in the winter months. Flip flops or athletic shoes work great on your feet.
-
A bayou is a slow-moving river connecting two waterways. A swamp is a flooded forest, and its water doesn’t move.

Do not use Uber. Our tour leaves from a roadside boat launch, and it will be very expensive, and finding a ride back will be really hard. If you need a ride, USE OUR TRANSPORTATION SERVICE that you can add during booking.

It is always beautiful in the swamps; it just offers different colors each season. During the winter, if you pick a warmer day, you will possibly still see an alligator too.
